GPS Constellation Management: Playing Not to Lose

In sports, there is a phenomenon that sometimes occurs when a team is leading towards the end of a game. It’s called “playing not to lose”.

The reason you are seeing high HDOP warnings from the NAVCEN and GPS “brownouts” during the day when RTK (GPS-only) isn’t working is because the GPS satellite constellation is sub-optimal. The current design of the GPS constellation is not focused on “playing to win”, but rather “playing not to lose”.

Total construction in 2009 and 2010 will be down 14%, 5%, respectively

Total construction in 2009 and 2010 will be down 14% and 5% respectively.

Construction employment shrinks in 325 of nation’s 337 largest metro areas

All but 12 communities nationwide saw declines in construction employment between September 2008 and 2009 according to a new analysis of metropolitan area employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. That analysis found more construction jobs were lost in Phoenix (35,100) than in any other city in America.

LEED Gold animal shelter opens in L.A.

Los Angeles’ North Central Animal Care Center has officially become the first LEED Gold certified animal shelter in the United States. An extensive remodel of the Center, first constructed in the early 1970s, was unveiled in October of 2006. Originally awarded silver certification, the addition of more sustainable features and their documentation has recently led to LEED Gold status confirmation by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Autodesk AEC headquarters certified LEED Platinum

The Autodesk, Inc., AEC headquarters in Waltham, Mass., designed by KlingStubbins and constructed by Tocci Building Co. using Building Information Modeling and an Integrated Project Delivery contract, was certified LEED-Platinum last week by the U.S. Green Building Council. The AEC headquarters project was featured last April in a BD+C feature story on IPD.
